When you’re planning a bathroom remodel or new construction, choosing a bathtub sounds pretty simple at first.
You need something that fits the space, holds water, and hopefully looks great.
But once you start shopping, you quickly realize there are a lot of options — acrylic, fiberglass, cast iron, freestanding tubs, alcove tubs, deep soaking tubs, lower-entry tubs… and suddenly choosing a bathtub becomes its own project.
So before getting into what’s new at Choice Building Products, let’s start with the basics: what exactly is an acrylic alcove bathtub, and when does it make sense for your bathroom?

What Is an Acrylic Alcove Bathtub?
An alcove bathtub is designed to fit between three walls, which makes it one of the most common bathtub styles used in residential bathrooms. The most common size is a 60-inch, three-wall alcove tub, which is the standard setup found in many homes.
Unlike a freestanding tub that needs open space around it, an alcove tub fits neatly into an existing bathtub opening. This makes it especially useful when you’re remodeling a smaller bathroom or replacing an older tub without completely changing the room’s layout.
When the tub is made from acrylic, you also get a surface that’s smooth, comfortable, easy to clean, and available in designs that can give an older bathroom a much more updated look.
Why Choose an Acrylic Bathtub?
An alcove bathtub is designed to fit inside a three-wall opening with one finished front side, often called the apron or skirt.
It’s one of the most common bathtub styles because it allows the same space to work as both a bathtub and a shower. That makes it especially practical for kids’ bathrooms, guest bathrooms, smaller bathrooms, and replacement projects where you don’t want to completely redesign the room.
Acrylic refers to the material used to create the finished surface of the tub. It provides a smooth, non-porous surface that’s comfortable to the touch and relatively easy to clean.
But acrylic isn’t your only option.
Acrylic vs. Fiberglass vs. Cast Iron: What’s the Difference?
Acrylic
Acrylic tubs offer a nice middle ground between durability, weight, appearance, and price. They’re non-porous, resist staining, and are lighter than cast iron, which can make installation easier. A quality acrylic tub can also feel much more substantial than a thin fiberglass unit.
Fiberglass
Fiberglass is usually one of the least expensive bathtub materials, but that lower upfront price can come with tradeoffs.
Fiberglass surfaces tend to be more porous and can be more prone to scratching, fading, chipping, and flexing over time.
Basically: cheaper doesn’t always mean better value.
Cast Iron
Cast iron tubs have that solid, heavy-duty feel people love, but they’re also — unsurprisingly — very heavy.
That extra weight can make transportation and installation more difficult, especially during a remodel. Acrylic gives you a warmer surface and a much lighter product while still providing a solid bathing experience.
Why Does an Alcove Tub Work So Well in Smaller Bathrooms?
Not every bathroom has room for a giant freestanding tub.
And frankly, not every bathroom needs one.
An alcove bathtub fits tightly between three walls, so you can have a tub and shower in the same footprint without sacrificing additional floor space. Alcove tubs are also generally less expensive than freestanding tubs because only the front side needs to be finished.
They’re especially useful for:

Lower Tub or Deeper Soaking Tub?
Choosing your bathtub height really comes down to one question:
How are you actually going to use it?
A lower-profile tub can be easier to step into and is often more convenient if you’re bathing kids or simply don’t want to climb over a tall tub wall every day.
A deeper soaking tub gives you more water depth and can make more sense if your idea of relaxing involves actually sitting back and soaking instead of taking a five-minute shower.
Neither option is automatically better.
And if you’re looking for a happy medium, we have a mid-height option for you too.
It’s about choosing the tub that fits your household and your bathroom, not just the one that looks good online.

What Should You Look for in a Quality Acrylic Tub?
Acrylic tubs may look similar in photos, but construction can vary quite a bit.
When you’re comparing tubs, don’t only look at the price tag.
Look at things like:
The thickness and weight of the tub.
A heavier, thicker acrylic tub generally feels more solid and has less of the flex you may experience with inexpensive tubs.
A non-porous surface.
Acrylic doesn’t absorb dirt the way more porous materials can, making it easier to maintain.
An integral flange.
The raised flange around the tub helps direct water back toward the tub instead of allowing it behind the surrounding wall system.
A textured or anti-slip bottom.
This is especially important when the bathtub will also be used as a shower.
The warranty.
If a manufacturer barely stands behind the tub, that’s worth paying attention to.

And This Is Where Choice Building Products Comes In
After explaining what an alcove bathtub is and what makes a good one, we decided it made sense to add another option to the Choice Building Products bathroom lineup.
And instead of giving you one tub and telling you to make it work, there are several configurations depending on how the bathroom will actually be used.
Our current acrylic alcove bathtub options include 60″ x 30″ and 60″ x 32″ sizes, with lower 14″, standard 18″, and deeper 21″ options depending on the model. Left- and right-hand drain configurations are also available, which can help reduce unnecessary plumbing changes during a replacement project.

So, What Makes Our Acrylic Alcove Tubs Different?
Our acrylic tubs are designed to give homeowners and remodeling professionals options without sacrificing quality.
Depending on the model, features include:
The 14″ and 18″ models include a 25-year warranty, while the deeper 21″ soaking tubs include a 10-year warranty.
And yes — these tubs can also be paired with waterproof wall panels, glass tub doors, and complete shower kits to create a complete tub/shower space.
Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s the simple version.
Choose a 14″ tub if:
Easier entry or bathing kids is the priority.
Choose an 18″ tub if:
You want a balance between everyday bathing, showering, and soaking.
Choose a 21″ tub if:
You really want that deeper soaking experience.
And before ordering, make sure you confirm your rough opening, tub width, and whether you need a left- or right-hand drain.
Choosing a tub shouldn’t turn into hours of comparing nearly identical white rectangles on the internet.
Tell us what size opening you have, where your drain is located, and how you plan to use the tub.
We’ll help you narrow it down.
